Categories: Company Culture

From the moment we founded Cribl five years ago, we had a very clear vision for how we wanted to build this company. Our focus was and still is to solve our customers’ problems by bringing the right products to market, backed by the right team of people, and do it in the right way, which proves particularly important when growing at the rate of Cribl.

At Cribl, the “right way” means that our values guide everything that we do, and a big part of that is our commitment to creating an inclusive culture. We know that it helps drive our success and every day we see firsthand that our diversity makes us a better company––we make better decisions, provide better support to customers, build better products, and foster a better culture.

As Pride Month unfolds, we are reminded of the progress we’ve made to support both the LGBTQ+ community and people of all backgrounds here at Cribl. Over the past year, we’ve taken a number of specific actions to ensure we are supporting people and communities of all varieties, and the progress we’ve made together is incredible.

Benefits for All

One of the most important and often overlooked areas where companies can better support employees is benefits. Benefits impact all of us and our families. That’s why we’re constantly reviewing our benefits to ensure we’re offering equal benefits to all employees. In addition to the fundamental benefits like competitive salary, stock options, generous PTO, and much more, we’ve taken a number of steps to level up how we support our employees’ health and wellbeing.

In just the past year, we have extended healthcare coverage to include both spouses and domestic partners (where allowed by the law). We provide support for adoption and foster care. We offer a number of family-forming benefits, including coverage without a required diagnosis of infertility for treatments, support with gestational carrier services, and access to donor agencies as well as legal support for donor-assisted reproduction. We also provide care navigation to find clinics that offer LGBTQ+-affirming services and fertility preservation options and guidance for trans and non-binary employees. These actions have a direct impact on the wellbeing of our employees, and we’re committed to finding more opportunities to provide even better support going forward.

Creating Community

As we move up the hierarchy of needs, we have also taken a number of actions to provide a sense of belonging and connection for our employees. We currently have seven Employee Resource Groups, including Prism––a community for our LGBTQ+ employees and allies to come together to support each other and have some fun, where I’m fortunate to serve as the executive sponsor. Prism, along with our other ERGs, hosts a variety of activities each month for employees, including events like historical tours and trivia games as well as important learning opportunities and conversations led by outside experts.

Many of our employees also take action outside of our walls and get involved in programs that benefit our communities. Outside of work, my wife and I started Jessi’s House, which provides transitional housing for LGBTQ+ young adults who find themselves with no one else to help. Today, we house six wonderful young adults, and we’re looking to do even more. We are also extending our reach to provide case management for individuals who may have found housing but are struggling to get their lives back on track after the trauma of losing their support systems. My hope is that we can make a positive impact on people and show up when it’s needed most.

On Being Remote

Since our founding, Cribl has been a remote-first company. We believe great work can happen anywhere and no one should be tied to a physical location. One of the many advantages of remote work is that it helps us build a more diverse team and better supports the many folks we have here at Cribl. We have employees throughout the US and internationally, many of whom are located outside of the typical tech hubs. Being able to bring on folks in any location allows us to hire top talent and broaden our talent pool so that we can build a team full of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.

We have also found that our remote-first culture gives employees the flexibility they need to live full lives outside of work. This level of flexibility empowers our employees to be there for their families, pursue hobbies and passion projects, and live in their desired location without being tied to an office. At the same time, we also give our employees the choice to collaborate in our San Francisco office, meetup with local co-workers IRL for work and fun, and get together throughout the year to spend time with their team or the full company. We feel that we’ve struck the right balance here for all employees and, like everything else we do, we constantly look for ways to improve the experience and calibrate our working style to best fit our company and our employees.

At Cribl, we often say that software is a people business. Our customers love us because of the great people they work with each and every day, and we know that supporting our people is one of the most critical pieces to building a successful company. We’re always looking for passionate team members from diverse backgrounds to join us in our mission to make open observability a reality for today’s tech professionals. If this sounds interesting to you, check out our open jobs and reach out to us!
