42 startups became unicorns in August, one of the lowest monthly totals in 2021

That’s actually one of the lowest monthly totals so far in what has been a record-breaking year for venture capital funding. So far this year, the August unicorn total is tied for second-lowest with January. February saw the fewest new unicorns with 26.
